The Math Agency is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit working to ensure that all students in Washington State have the support they need to succeed in math, in school, and in life.
Our program costs roughly $2,000 per student per year.
The need
Getting off to a good start matters.
Research shows that students' academic trajectories are largely set by 3rd grade: those who get behind in elementary school tend to fall further and further behind over time.
This shapes the rest of their lives. It profoundly impacts their personal identities, their educational options, and afterwards, their ability to have a rewarding and successful career.
Unfortunately, Bellevue has four high-poverty, Title I elementary schools where over 60% of students aren't meeting basic state standards in math.
The good news: we know how to double the number of students meeting standards at these schools — it just takes the right support.
Our mission and our model
We support classrooms with trained academic coaches — adults who build strong, motivating relationships with students while teaching habits like persistence and self-directed problem-solving.
They track each student's progress and adjust instruction in real time, backed by proven learning tools and the data to know what's working.
The results
We've been building a program that is high-impact, cost-effective, and repeatable. Over the last 6 years, our per-student impact has steadily increased as we've grown the size of our program. In 2025-26, our average student more than doubled their historical growth rates, and we saw consistent, large impacts across 2 school districts, 5 schools, and 9 different classes.
Closing educational gaps isn't easy, but we've also shown that with two consecutive years of coaching, it is possible to double the number of students meeting state standards in multiple schools. One of them is profiled in this Seattle Times article.

How you can help
Our two partner districts doubled their investment in The Math Agency for 2026-27. They did this because of the results we produced — results that were made possible by donor funding. This is our strategy for scaling our work: donations fund new schools and classrooms. We demonstrate results there, and districts and government funders increase their support based on what we've proven. Donor funding thus drastically speeds up the rate at which we can serve more students.
Our program costs roughly $2,000 per student per year; given our impact on student learning this makes it extremely cost-effective. Recurring donations at that level help us reach more students now, and build the track record that leads to more public investment later.
